Service Corporation International (SCI) Corporate - Assistant Buyer in Houston, Texas

Overview & Responsibilities

Supports the product maintenance process which includes the day-to-day administration of item inventory and maintenance transactions such as validating item requests; configuring requests to business requirements and data guidelines; and ensuring compliance with general business rules and contract requirements as specified. Supports the execution of the item maintenance work flow process and may collaborate with other departments involved in the process. Coordinates and processes all item maintenance transactions and interacts directly with Buyers, Strategic Pricing, Products and various operational teams. Supports Buyers with various procurement tasks and activities such as selecting merchandise, placing orders, distributing inventory and performing assigned RFP activities.


100% Support Product Maintenance

  • Assist buyer in adding, deleting and maintaining suppliers in SCI’s Procure to Pay System, SCI SpendSmart.

  • Performs day-to-day and annual transactions to support Buyers and the item maintenance process including new item requests, deactivations/deletions and item change requests.

  • Verifies specifications of purchase requests.

  • Consults catalogs, internet, and suppliers to obtain prices and specifications.

  • Compiles and records prices, deliveries, and items purchased.

  • Tracks and logs requests.

  • Ensures compliance with business and contract requirements.

  • Maintains the integrity of the Item Hierarchy by executing all related transactional activities.

  • Reports on workflow output & other procurement metrics related to specific categories.

  • Facilitates and monitors the flow of items to and from the locations.

  • Provides procurement support to buyers.

  • Researches and requests information relative to products & costs.

  • Assists Buyers in selecting merchandise, placing orders, and distributing inventory.

  • Assists Buyers with RFP activities.

  • May collaborate with cross functional teams.

  • May contact vendors to ensure timeliness & accuracy of costs and other related information.

  • May confer with suppliers concerning late deliveries.

Requirements & Qualifications


  • High school diploma


  • Some retail experience, inventory control experience or experience in a related field.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Effective communicator who can build strong relationships in a highly diverse environment

  • Must be detail oriented

  • Ability to understand needs of front-end users

  • Ability to maintain policy and compliance requirements

  • Strong knowledge of PC applications

  • Must effectively manage time and deadlines
