Service Corporation International (SCI) Corporate - HR Compliance Specialist in Houston, Texas

Overview & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist the manager in overseeing specific aspects of the HR Compliance Department. Responsibilities will include providing direction and hands on guidance as a subject matter expert to our HR business partners in the areas of Form I9, E-Verify, and Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC).


60% Background Checks /Compliance Tasks

  • Performs research on background checks as needed.

  • Assist with administration of the services provided by our 3 rd party vendor.

  • Conduct a review of each candidate’s background including work/education/criminal history in a timely manner.

  • Monitor and respond to emails sent to the Compliance team inbox in a timely manner.

  • Update background check results in applicable systems.

  • Complete Individualized Assessment forms for criminal backgrounds for Analysts review (will serve as backup).

  • Order supplemental background checks as needed.

  • Reschedule drug tests as needed.

  • Verify candidates are not on the Do Not Rehire list.

  • Accurately assess candidate’s background requirements for the position they are being hired into

  • Assist with compliance audits.

  • Advise all levels of Field, Market Management and Sr. Management regarding the background agreement process.

40% Reporting

  • Reporting and support for Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC)

  • I-9 Compliance including processing Tentative Non-Confirmation forms for the E-Verify process.

  • Participate in various SRTs relating to corporate-wide initiatives

  • Offer assistance to Hiring Mangers and Recruiters with creating or modifying requisitions as needed

  • Assist with managing Workday process to ensure documents are up-to-date and legally compliant as needed

  • Maintain E-Verify compliance and resolve issues in E-Verify and Workday integration

  • Assist Manager on ad-hoc project requests

Requirements & Qualifications


  • High school diploma or equivalent


  • Minimum 3 years in a recruiting or management support role

  • Background investigation experience preferred

  • Familiarity with Form I-9 preferred

  • Working knowledge of the onboarding process for new hires preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong initiative, high energy, strong sense of urgency and the ability to handle many projects simultaneously

  • Maintain high level of confidentiality with access to candidate and employee personal information

  • Experience in Workday and iCIMS systems is highly preferred

  • A passion for continuing education within the ever-changing areas of HR compliance required

  • Attention to detail and the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment

  • Superior analytical and critical thinking skills

  • Must be able to multitask and prioritize workload, effectively managing conflicting priorities on a daily basis, move fast

  • Strong technical skills in the use of HR systems, MS office and other tools, excel proficient.

  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to identify problems and drive appropriate solutions across diverse stakeholders

  • Strong internal and external customer service focus with an ability to develop solid working relationships

  • Meets deadlines and communicates concerns and/or changes timely and effectively
